The Cervin de Loppé is restored to its former glory ahead of its exhibition at the Majestic

Some works of art spend years in obscurity before finally seeing the light of day once more.
Gabriel Loppé’s (1825–1913) monumental painting The Matterhorn as seen from the Gornergrat above the Zermatt Valley is about to experience such a renaissance.

On learning that several large-scale works previously on display at the Majestic were to be transferred to the renovated museum in Chamonix, the chair of the Friends of Gabriel Loppé association – and a descendant of the painter – suggested making use of the empty walls of the former luxury hotel to exhibit this painting, which had remained in the artist’s family. Today, thanks to a loan granted to the local authority, it is set to be exhibited to the public. But before it is hung, the canvas is undergoing a new, meticulous restoration campaign.
